Men expressing emotions, emotional suppression and masculinity are the heart of this clip. Brian Sachetta grew up during the "boys don't cry" era, when men were expected to push difficult emotions down, tough things out and keep moving.

He explains how that message showed up at three different levels: the larger culture of the late 90s and early 2000s, the toughness that comes with growing up in Boston, and his own family environment where difficult conversations rarely happened. He and Bruce Anthony also get into why anger often became one of the few emotions men felt comfortable showing, what happens when a family never builds the language to talk about hard feelings, and why telling a child they have a "safe space" may not be enough if emotional honesty was never modeled for them.

Brian's point is simple: if boys are never taught how to identify and communicate what they feel, becoming an emotionally open adult is a much harder climb.

This clip is from Episode 332 of Unsolicited Perspectives: Strong on the Outside, Falling Apart Inside with Brian Sachetta.
